"Through the Sun, we see time"
An awareness of the fragility and value of time can bring peace of mind.
With my work, I aim to create moments of calm amid the fleeting and often overwhelming pace of
life. As the world becomes more overstimulating, I want my art to offer a pause and a quiet break
from this new normal.
Time is one of the most fundamental aspects of our everyday experience. Since ancient times, we
have measured it through the movements of the sun, and the other stars. Light and time are
inextricably linked and photography captures remnants of both.
By using photography as my primary medium and combining it with different techniques I
emphasize the presence of light and time in each image. Some of these methods include: burning
film with sunlight and long exposures, capturing astronomical objects that have different light
speeds, creating double exposures, and documenting shadows.
This book is an homage to natural light as a way to visualize the value of time in our day-to-day
lives.

Collaborations:
While working on this project I realised another way to highlight light and time in an image is by painting or drawing.
While doing so the possibilities are endless and you can make the sunrays and shadows stand out even more. I
collaborated with illustrator Bobbie Bennis and she illustrated some lino cuts that are based on my photographs. Those
images can be found in the book.
Furthermore with the help of astronomer Johan van Kuilenburg at the historic observatory in Leiden,
I was able to capture the Sun, the moon, and different stars/astronomical objects.
